Achievements With Condoms

I have worked to increase condom use in HIV prevention projects in Ethiopia, Namibia, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and Azerbaijan. I have also worked to increase condom use for birth spacing in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, Albania, Yemen and Afghanistan. Here is a chronology of my condom-related experience:

Afghanistan, 2008. Social Marketing Project for Maternal and Child Health. Evaluated achievements of Constella-Futures Int., with emphasis on behavior change communication and training of health providers. Also drafted proposal for follow-on project. Employed by Checchi Consulting. Funded by USAID.

Pakistan, 2008. Communication Strategy for Birth Spacing. Worked with FALAH communication strategy team to: (1) draft evidence-based papers on effective communication approaches, and on repositioning family planning toward birth spacing; and (2) develop FALAH’s communication, advocacy and mobilization strategy for birth spacing. Employed by Population Council. Funded by USAID.

Pakistan, 2008. HIV/AIDS Risk Reduction Communication Strategy. Worked with the CIDA-supported HIV-AIDS Surveillance Project (HASP). Based on results of surveillance and other reports plus a planning workshop and interviews of Female Sex Workers, designed Communication Strategy to increase use of STI services, VCT and condoms. Recommendations included: AIDS Risk Reduction conceptual framework; “push & pull” management cycle; multimedia communication; education-entertainment; IPC training of health providers who counsel Female Sex Workers; six-month field-test of activities prior to scaling-up. Employed by Agriteam Canada. Funded by CIDA.

Bangladesh, 2007.Five-Year Action Plan for the Social Marketing Company. Worked with Eshna Consulting to lead planning workshops for managers of the Social Marketing Company. Produced first draft of key objectives and strategic approaches for the Action Plan, and an advocacy strategy aimed at potential investors. Reviewed second draft. Employed by Coffey International Development.

Yemen, 2005-06.. Led start-up of national Social Marketing project for contraception and HIV/AIDS control. Designed workplan, marketing plan, budgets, test market sites, baseline and formative studies, impact evaluation. Hired, mentored and supervised project staff and planned their training. Employed by Marie Stopes International for nine months. Funded by KfW.

India, 2005. Team Leader for evaluation of Social Marketing Strategies Project. Assessed management, implementation and effectiveness of strategies for increasing uptake of mother-and-child products, including condoms, in three northern states. Recommended expansion to other poor areas of India. Employed by Population Services International. Funded by USAID/India.

Bangladesh, 2005. Designed and facilitated planning workshop for the National AIDS-STD Programme and UNFPA. Used workshop results to create the “National Strategy for Safer Sex for HIV/AIDS Prevention”. Employed by UNFPA.

India, 2004. Led Mid-term Evaluation of the India-Canada HIV/AIDS Project (ICHAP). Assessed progress including gender issues and human rights. Recommended continuation and expansion of field work including strengthening of community activities. Employed by CIDA.

Nepal, 2003. Assessed community-based test sites for HIV/AIDS prevention among female sex workers and their clients in the Terai. Recommended technical and managerial changes required for expansion to nationwide scale. Employed by Family Health International. Funded by USAID.

Albania, 2003. Used participatory techniques to create Strategic Plan for NESMARK, the NGO that assists the government’s Reproductive Health program. Emphasized strengthening activities and adding HIV/AIDS control. Employed by Marie Stopes International. Funded by KfW.

Namibia, 2002. Assisted the government-supported National Social Marketing (NaSoMa) Programme to develop social marketing, advocacy, behavior change communications for HIV/AIDS control. Created proposal for expansion and development of NaSoMa. Employed by Marie Stopes International for five months. Funded by KfW.

Vietnam, 2001.Assessed achievements of DKT International, then examined feasibility of expanding the project. Recommended expansion along with capacity building of the local organization, 2001. Employed by JSI (UK). Funded by DfID.

Azerbaijan, 2000. Designed and led participatory workshops for Project staff, donors and government officers to develop HIV/AIDS prevention and implement Reproductive Health activities. Completed Feasibility Study and Concept Paper. Introduced social marketing concepts. Employed by Save the Children (US). Funded by UNFPA.

Ethiopia, 1999. Examined HIV/AIDS control and reproductive health achievements by DKT International. Used participatory techniques to develop proposal for development of project components including products, supply chain logistics, behavior change communication, Reproductive Health strategies, along with staff training. Employed by Royal Netherlands Embassy.

Indonesia, 1989. Designed communication component of Indonesia’s first National HIV/AIDS Awareness Programme. Employed by Academy for Educational Development for four years. Funded by USAID.

Pakistan, 1998. Evaluated strengths and weaknesses of six NGOs working in community-based contraceptive delivery. Employed by Pathfinder International. Funded by UNFPA.

Pakistan, 1983-2003. 1983: Team Leader, USAID’s Contraceptive Social Marketing Project Paper Team. Employed by USAID. 1989-2000: Resided continuously in Pakistan for 11 years. 1989-1993: PSI Resident Representative and Chief of Party, Contraceptive Social Marketing project. Founded Social Marketing Pakistan, an NGO renamed Greenstar in 2002. Employed by Population Services International. 1994-2000: various consultancies in Pakistan and elsewhere.

Bangladesh, 1982. Evaluated management issues, behavior change communication component and the impact of the national Contraceptive Social Marketing Project operated by Populations Services International. Employed by USAID.

Sri Lanka, 1972-1975. Created national social marketing system for Preethi condoms and Mithuri oral contraceptive pills. Organized medical education and consumer education campaigns via radio, press & direct mail to doctors. Created contraceptive logistics system including demand and supply requirements. Journalist’s articles appeared in New York Times, Psychology Today and The Geographic Magazine. Employed by Population Services International. Funded by IPPF.
